3-Tab vs Architectural Shingles: Which Is Worth the Money

3-tab shingles used to be the default on every home in America. Architectural shingles now outsell them 4-to-1. The price gap has narrowed to about $1,500 to $3,000 on a typical home, while the performance gap has widened. Here is the honest comparison so you can decide which makes sense for your budget.

Our Verdict

Architectural shingles are worth the upgrade for almost every homeowner. The additional $1,500 to $3,000 upfront buys you 8 to 12 more years of life, dramatically better wind performance (critical in tornado and derecho territory), and a warranty that actually covers you past year 5. The only scenario where 3-tab makes sense is a rental property or a home you are selling within 2 years where ROI on the upgrade will not be captured. For your own home in St. Louis or Chicago, go architectural.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put architectural shingles over existing 3-tab?

Building code in most Missouri and Illinois jurisdictions allows one layer of overlay. We do not recommend it. The added weight stresses the deck, trapped moisture causes rot, and you lose the chance to inspect and repair the decking. Tear-off is always our recommendation.

Are 3-tab shingles being discontinued?

Not formally, but manufacturers are reducing 3-tab production and color options. GAF and Owens Corning are shifting lines toward architectural products. Within 5 years, 3-tab availability will be limited. This is another reason to go architectural now — matching replacement shingles for a 3-tab roof in 2032 may be difficult.

What about designer or luxury shingles?

Designer shingles (GAF Grand Canyon, Owens Corning Berkshire) add another $1,800 to $3,500 to the project. They mimic slate or cedar shake and last 35-40 years. Worth considering if aesthetics are important and you are staying long-term, but the cost-per-year-of-life is higher than standard architectural.
