Architectural Shingles vs 3-Tab: Why the Upgrade Pays for Itself

The Two Shingles You Will Choose Between

When it is time for a roof replacement, most homeowners in St. Louis are choosing between two types of asphalt shingles: 3-tab and architectural (also called dimensional or laminate). Understanding the difference saves you from making a decision you will regret in ten years.

3-Tab Shingles: The Budget Option

3-tab shingles are the flat, uniform-looking shingles that were the industry standard for decades. They are:

  • Thinner and lighter weight
  • Rated for 60-70 mph winds typically
  • Warranted for 20-25 years (though they often fail sooner)
  • Less expensive per square -- roughly $80-$100 per square installed
  • Flat appearance with visible cutout pattern

Architectural Shingles: The Modern Standard

Architectural shingles are now the most commonly installed shingle in the United States. They are:

  • Thicker with a layered, dimensional construction
  • Rated for 110-130 mph winds
  • Warranted for 30-50 years (lifetime on premium lines)
  • More expensive per square -- roughly $100-$140 installed
  • Textured, shadow-line appearance that mimics slate or wood shake

The Price Difference Is Smaller Than You Think

On a typical 25-square roof, the material upgrade from 3-tab to architectural adds $500-$1,000 to the total project cost. That is it. On a $10,000+ project, you are talking about a 5-10% increase for a dramatically better product.

When you factor in the longer warranty, better wind resistance, and improved curb appeal (which directly impacts home value), the architectural shingle pays for itself before the first storm.

Why We Stopped Installing 3-Tab

At Vulcan Construction, we do not install 3-tab shingles. Not because we are trying to upsell you, but because we cannot stand behind a product that we know will underperform in St. Louis weather. Our region gets hail, high winds, and dramatic temperature swings. 3-tab shingles are simply not built for that.

Every roof we install uses architectural shingles at minimum, with proper underlayment, ventilation, and flashing details. That is how you build a roof that actually lasts.

Impact on Home Value

If you are thinking about selling within the next decade, architectural shingles are a no-brainer. Buyers and their inspectors know the difference. A 3-tab roof signals "builder grade" or "budget." An architectural roof signals quality and care. Realtors in West County and South County will tell you the same thing -- roof quality moves the needle on offers.
