Best Roofing Materials for St. Louis Weather

St. Louis Is Tough on Roofs

Our weather is a stress test for roofing materials. Summer temperatures pushing 100 degrees. Winter freezing below zero. Hail, straight-line winds, ice storms, and UV exposure that breaks down asphalt faster than you would expect this far north. Any roofing material you put on a St. Louis home needs to handle all of it.

Here is what works -- and what does not -- based on real performance in our market.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles: The Go-To

For most residential properties, high-quality architectural shingles are the sweet spot of performance, cost, and availability. Look for:

  • Class 4 impact rating: This is the highest rating for hail resistance. Impact-resistant shingles can save you up to 28% on your homeowners insurance in Missouri.
  • 130+ mph wind rating: Standard in most premium architectural lines
  • SBS-modified asphalt: This rubberized formulation is more flexible and handles temperature extremes better than standard oxidized asphalt
  • Algae resistance: St. Louis humidity promotes algae growth. Look for copper-granule technology that prevents black streaking.

Top performers in our region: Owens Corning Duration STORM, CertainTeed Landmark Pro, and GAF Timberline HDZ.

Metal Roofing: Growing in Popularity

Standing seam metal is increasingly common on St. Louis homes, especially in West County and newer construction. Benefits include:

  • 50+ year lifespan with minimal maintenance
  • Excellent wind resistance (many rated to 140+ mph)
  • Reflects heat, reducing cooling costs
  • Handles hail well (though large hail can dent)

The trade-off is cost: metal runs 2-3x the price of asphalt shingles. For homeowners planning to stay in their home long-term, the math often works out.

What We Do Not Recommend for STL

  • Wood shake: Beautiful but maintenance-intensive, fire risk without treatment, and our humidity promotes rot and mold.
  • Standard 3-tab shingles: They simply do not hold up to our storm activity. The wind rating alone disqualifies them for a smart investment.
  • Slate (natural): Gorgeous but extremely heavy, expensive, and requires specialized installation that few contractors in the region can do properly.

Our Recommendation

For the majority of St. Louis homeowners, a Class 4 impact-resistant architectural shingle with SBS-modified asphalt is the best combination of performance, cost, and long-term value. You get top-tier storm protection, an insurance discount, and a roof that handles our extreme temperature swings without premature failure.
